Adiwarman
Azwar Karim is Vice Chairman at the Council of the Working Committee on
Sharia Capital Market of National Sharia Board of the Republic of
Indonesia from 2010 to 2015 and assigned member of the National Sharia
Board since 1999. Adiwarman Karim is also Second Chairman at Islamic
Finance Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KADIN) from
November 2010 until 2015.
As a seasoned Sharia scholar, Mr. Karim is
best known in the industry for his valuable contribution in expanding
the frontiers of Islamic banking and finance as president director and
He has pioneered several innovative Sharia financial products for the
industry and acted as Chairman of the committee for new Banking and
Central Banking law and functioned as Sharia Expert at the Legal
Drafting of Sukuk Act and Indonesia's Capital Market Authority to
promote Islamic Finance. Besides his current assignment in numerous
Sharia boards such Prudential Life Insurance, BNP Paribas Investment
Partners, Great Eastern Sharia Insurance and from 2003 to 2008 at HSBC
Arnanah Sharia Indonesia as well as for several national companies,
Adiwarman Karim acted as International Sharia Expert for Asian
Development Bank for the Establishment of Financial Services Authority.
Karim possesses a,
wealth of academic and research experience in Indonesia, the MENA and
Europe and received MBA from European University in Belgium and Boston
University, USA. Karim initial supported the development of Islamic
finance industry in Indonesia when he joined the first full-fledged
Islamic Bank in Indonesia Bank Muamalat straight after formation in 1992
and later hold chair as vice president of the Muamalat Institute and
Main Branch Head of Bank Muarnalat in Bandung until 2001. Recently he
was member of the International Islamic Financial Market (IIFM) Sharia
Advisory Panel in Bahrain and is a former visiting Research Associate at
Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies in UK and initiator and lecturer of
the Certified Islamic Financial Analyst Program at University of
Indonesia.
Moreover A. Karim presented several conference Papers,
recently in Turkey on Microfinance and in Germany for the
Sparkassen-Foundation and acted as Consultant for the Small Medium
Entrepreneurs Promotion Project with GTZ back in 1998 and as chairman
for the Banker's Certification Program for the Indonesian Sharia Rural
Banks. He has authored several best-selling books on Islamic banking and
finance and is a frequent speaker at industry conferences. His deep
understanding of Sharia, hands-on experience of working on some of the
most innovative Islamic financial products, excellent relationships with
most of the top industry Sharia scholars and driving the Industry
towards a great development not just in Indonesia, he is one of those
who are right fit for a continues emerging Islamic finance industry.
